When many were still grappling with completing high school, as early as in his 9th Grade (Standard), Dr. Aravindan found Lifesciences subjects more fascinating and consequently made up his mind to pursue a career as a medicine man, so that he could help alleviate the suffering of his fellow mankind. He also knew that it meant putting in extra-long hours of study and hard work. For the young lad this was not new, as he was consistently the class topper, in every class and when graduating from his 12th grade, he was the District Topper. He had thus successfully paved the path to realizing his ambition to be a doctor.
After 12th grade, he joined the Stanley Medical College at Chennai, in 1984 to become a doctor. In the final year of his graduate studies in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S), he was posted to the surgical department headed by Professor C.M.K.Reddy, where he began his surgical career. After completing his 5 year tenure of undergraduate study in Medicine and during his internship, he was greatly influenced by Professor V.D. Swaminathan to pursue his medical career as a surgeon. It was during this period that he also realized that surgery was the quickest solution to remove pain and suffering for all bone ailments. He was then just 23 years old.
Having decided that he wanted to become a bone specialist, an Orthopedic Surgeon, fully understanding that this meant hard work and devotion of all his time to honing his surgical skills, he went on to do his Post Graduation in Medicine at B. J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, affiliated to Gujarat University. It was here while he was pursuing his Master in Surgery (M.S) post graduate degree, that his penchant for Orthopedic Surgery, developed intensely. In 1995, he once again graduated with top honors winning the coveted Dr. DA Patel Gold Medal.
Post post-graduation (MS in Orthopedics), there was no stopping Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, anymore. He went on to arm himself with further medical qualifications to become a specialist of specialists. He obtained his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (July 2000), further specializing by completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Trauma & Orthopedics from Brighton University, London (July 2007) and crowning his educational quest with his second FRCS in Trauma & Orthopedics from the Specialty Board of Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in Scotland (November 2008).
In the midst of pursuing a strenuous education, Dr. Aravindan also worked full days at the following hospitals, where he sharpened and fine-tuned his skills in orthopedic surgery, specializing in knee replacement and shoulder surgical therapies.
The Bone Healer’s Upward Surgical Ascent
From January 1997 to June 2001 (4.6years) Dr. Aravindan worked in Ireland and thereafter from July 2001 to July 2010 (10 years), Dr. Aravindan practiced in London, UK. The year 2010 was a momentous year for Dr. Aravindan, when he decided to head back home to give back to the community that he had grown up in and where his heart beats to the rhythm of Chennai’s medical needs, more especially to cater to the elderly, with the first of its kind specialty in Chennai – The Multispecialty Ortho-Geriatric Department / Hospital.
Dr. Aravindan is the Chief Orthopedic Surgeon and Executive Director of the Chennai arm of Kauvery Hospital, a hospital that has grown in the short span of 5 years under his aegis to become one among the top four hospitals in Chennai. This alone speaks volumes of his administrative abilities and medical / surgical brilliance.
